Wydawnictwo powstało w 1852 w Bostonie, formalnie publikację książek rozpoczęło w 1864, kiedy otwarto oddział w Nowym Jorku, a w 1869 przniesiono tam siedzibę główną. Jako niezależna firma przestało istnieć w 1985. Dziś w ramach Penguin Books istnieją 2 imprinty: Dutton i Dutton Children's Books.
